Kau Yan College Based on the three major concepts of "Connect, Enrich, Extend", we build a school-based English teaching framework that organically combines language learning, personal growth and world exploration, making English an important way for students to "lead to a better self and a wider world": students can not only use English flexibly in daily life, but also explore the world in English. Ultimately, they can bring an international perspective and broaden their blueprint for future studies and career development. Tian Zhehao and Wang Haoyang, 2025 Form 6 graduates, used their excellent English scores to seize opportunities in innovation and scientific research and enter the Bachelor of Engineering (Artificial Intelligence) program at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. To this end, the school is committed to cultivating students to become confident, active and enjoyable English learners.

Exercise critical thinking and expression and cultivate the overall quality of the person

The school's school-based English curriculum aims to go beyond the teaching of language knowledge and integrate English into students' life experience and moral cultivation. Through immersive interaction, multi-perspective thinking guidance, collaborative learning and various creative activities, students' English potential is fully stimulated.

The curriculum design closely follows the concept of "Connect": at the junior high school level, literary readings that are close to the growing experience of teenagers are selected to guide students to explore the world, uphold justice, and cherish friendship through reading; at the high school level, highly speculative writing topics such as "Spending a Day with Celebrities" and "Debating the Existence and Abolition of the Examination System" are incorporated to seamlessly connect learning with the real world, thereby igniting students' enthusiasm for knowledge and making them active explorers.

What is particularly eye-catching is the systematic graded English speech training:

Form 1 lays the foundation with story speeches; Form 2 deepens expression through radio drama creation; Form 3 builds self-confidence through public speaking; Form 4 internalizes logic through TED-style speeches; and finally Form 5 uses debate competitions to hone critical thinking. The planning is step-by-step, effectively training students' self-confidence, style and critical thinking.

Artificial intelligence collaborative learning promotes reflection and autonomy

The school makes good use of artificial intelligence to assist English teaching. While improving learning efficiency, it also pays more attention to cultivating students' ability to think independently and learn independently. Teachers guide students to write specific artificial intelligence instructions, and combined with writing feedback, guide students to try to ask questions to the artificial intelligence to further optimize the content of specific paragraphs. By comparing their own original works with texts generated by artificial intelligence, students can reflect on their own shortcomings, learn language skills, realize personalized learning with the support of technology, and gradually establish the habit of independent learning.

Integrate professional resources to construct high-quality teaching strategies

The school adopts adaptive teaching strategies, which not only provide opportunities for gifted students to realize their potential, but also take into account students' learning diversity. In terms of gifted education, the school participated in the Education Bureau’s gifted education seed program and introduced relevant teaching strategies and curriculum design projects. Later, it was invited to become a seed school and join the gifted education network to continue to optimize teaching practices. In order to accurately meet students' individual learning needs, the school implements group teaching according to students' English proficiency, and integrates multiple assessment tasks into the classroom design, so that students with different abilities can fully demonstrate what they have learned and achieve teaching goals that keep pace with the times. In addition, it has collaborated with the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education to provide students with summer tertiary courses to bridge their future studies.

The school is committed to creating rich and diverse learning experiences, integrating English into life situations and cultural experiences, building a platform for the real use of English, and expanding students' international horizons. Through regular activities such as English Day, English Week, and morning meeting sharing, we create an immersive language environment, encourage students to use English flexibly in practice, and promote peer learning. The school also encourages students to actively plan and host English activities to enhance organizational and expressive skills and achieve self-growth.

The academic week held every year has a distinct theme. Last year, with the theme of "Outstanding Historical Figures", young Hong Kong Shakespeareans were invited to perform at the school to guide students to deeply appreciate the charm of British literature. This year, with the theme of "Around the Globe in One Day", the Watoto Chorus was specially invited to the school for exchanges. Students even had lunch with children from Uganda, sharing campus life and experiencing cross-cultural dialogue.

In the future, the school will continue to deepen English learning: the junior high school will hold a "Global Game Show", inviting guests from many countries to the school for cultural sharing and interactive Q&A; the high school will set up a "Human Library" to allow students to have an in-depth understanding of the situation in Africa and enhance their knowledge of other countries' cultures.

Academic foundation, stage to show potential

The school promotes English education that is both creative and academic, allowing students to improve their language application abilities in rich situations and inject vitality into learning. The school’s English debating team actively participates in inter-school competitions and often communicates and competes with students from different schools and grades. In recent years, it has won the championship and Best Debater in the "UNSDGs Debating Competition", and also won the championship and runner-up in the "Hong Kong Secondary School Debating Competition".

In addition, the school also organizes English dramas to encourage students to flexibly express their imagination, creative expression and artistic perception in English. This year, there is a new practice, the first original English musical. The campus TV station is also a platform for students to perform. An English ambassador once wrote and directed a series of dramas. Related works became an important basis for his successful direct admission to the Department of Media Studies of Hong Kong Baptist University.

The school actively expands overseas exchange activities, encourages students to connect with the world in English, deepen their language skills through real communication and practice, and establish an international perspective.

Last school year, some students stood out among all the students in Hong Kong and were selected for the "13-Day Ice and Snow Dreamers 2024 Antarctic Study Tour" organized by the Partnership Education Foundation to explore the world in English during the transnational voyage and scientific exchange. The magnificence and fragility of Antarctic glaciers have inspired students to care deeply about sustainable development issues. Some students are determined to devote themselves to environmental science, while others are reshaping their values ​​​​in the face of extreme challenges and learning to face future life with resilience and adaptability. This white journey has made English no longer just a subject, but a bridge connecting global issues. In addition, students visited Nepal and witnessed the resilience of local families in natural disasters through home visits, and learned to be grateful and cherished; they collaborated to solve problems during sudden power outages, exercising adaptability and team spirit; they created joy for local children with their own hands, and experienced the true meaning of "giving is more blessed than receiving." These experiences extend English learning from the classroom to the real world, making language a tool to convey care, and truly realizing the educational significance of "promoting growth through English and enlightening the soul through service." The English Department also holds overseas English exchange tours every year, aiming to allow students to immerse themselves in learning in an English context. Last school year, we visited Switzerland, allowing students to explore nature and communicate with local students among the magnificent mountains.

This year, the school has further planned four major international exchange groups, combining interdisciplinary and digital education learning strategies to deepen the connotation of education. Each exchange group has a clear learning focus: the Ugandan group focuses on social service, and students will have in-depth interactions with local volunteers; the South African group focuses on animal conservation issues; the Australian group focuses on English improvement and the practice of marine ecological conservation; and the Arctic Circle group conducts scientific expeditions, allowing students to first explore the world of scientific research in an English-speaking environment.
