English is the key to opening the door to the world. As a public middle school in an international city, Principal Chung Wai Shing pointed out that "@TERM0@@ is committed to creating global learning opportunities for students. It currently has three overseas sister schools (Japan, New Zealand, and Germany). Through the interdisciplinary group English policy, it comprehensively enhances students' interest in learning English and cultivates a mind and vision that cares about their country and the world."

Interdisciplinary English Group Visits to World-renowned Universities

All disciplines and administrative groups in Renji No. 2 Middle School have the responsibility to promote language learning. Principal Chung Wai Shing believes that to effectively enhance interest in learning English, English needs to be integrated into life and connected with students’ lives. The inter-subject English policy is an important strategy. Junior high schools have English teaching groups to increase students' opportunities and confidence in using English. Comprehensive science and mathematics in some classes use English as the language of instruction and are taught in small groups, adding extra class hours to enhance students' confidence and adaptability. In order to encourage students to continue to face difficulties in English learning, the school held an English science themed inspection this year. During this trip, they also visited the National University of Singapore to experience English courses.

Teacher team attaches great importance to English teaching and research

Renji No. 2 Middle School is committed to building an excellent English teaching team. The English subject is led by two senior degree teachers. The subject director was selected for i-Journey in 2019 and was recommended by the Education Bureau to further study "Assessment Literacy" at the University of Southampton in the UK. The English Department attaches great importance to teaching research. Last school year, it was invited by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority to become one of the leading schools to study the use of AI systems to improve students' English writing skills. It was also invited by the authority to share the results with the academic community at the HKEAA forum. This academic year, I was invited again to participate in the AI English Writing Pilot Research Program sponsored by ETS Research Institute, an American academic evaluation agency.

This study commissioned one local middle school to participate in each of five regions around the world, including: Mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea, Türkiye, and the United States. As one of the five participating schools in the world, Renji No. 2 Middle School allows students to use the AI platform for free, learn to use AI tools appropriately, and complete three argumentative papers. ETS was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in the United States. It is currently the world's largest non-profit academic assessment organization. It develops or manages a number of globally circulated international English tests, including: TOEFL, TOEIC, GRE, Praxis, etc.

Global English Experience

In order to create a real foreign language environment, the school has successfully applied for the "AFS International Exchange Program" three times and received Italian, Japanese and Russian students respectively. Principal Chung Wai Shing said, "International exchange students help to promote students' motivation to use foreign languages, and also enhance their respect for multiculturalism and cultivate cross-ethnic social affection." Renji No. 2 Middle School is one of the few middle schools that directly offers a "six-year consistent" third language subject. As early as 2012, it has offered Japanese as an optional elective for students. The Academic Affairs Section holds the "International Language and Culture Week" every year, hoping that after students learn English and Mandarin well, they can then master a fluent foreign language. This year, some students successfully obtained the "Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology" scholarship to study at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Japan. The five-year university tuition and living expenses are fully funded by the Japanese government.

Make good use of data and assess to promote learning

The school is committed to practicing "assessment to promote learning". As early as 2022, it will participate in the "Data-driven Assessment Enhancement Programme" of the HKEAA and introduce the "Diagnostic Feedback System" for the Diploma of Secondary Education Examination to promote various subjects to follow up on students' learning needs more scientifically in the regular teaching process.

"The school has always encouraged students to participate in different international English proficiency assessments. In addition to understanding their personal English proficiency, they can strive for excellence in learning and teaching, and students can obtain internationally recognized qualifications, which will help them advance to higher education and find employment in the future." Principal Chung Wai Shing continued, unlike some middle schools that only subsidize students with excellent English scores, the school's "English International Test" high subsidy policy benefits all students.
