H.K.T.A. Immersive English context improves confidence in English expression

The school has listed the cultivation of English proficiency as a key development issue, and began to implement English classes taught by foreign teachers three years ago, striving to create an immersive English learning environment. Principal Cai said: "The school currently has four foreign teachers. In the English conversation and reading classes, a group learning model of 4 to 5 people is adopted. Each group is assigned a foreign teacher or English teacher, and each student has multiple opportunities to speak, increasing students' opportunities to express and interact in English."

In order to take care of students' learning differences, the school has established a complete tiered reading ladder and holds school-wide English proficiency assessments twice a year to select appropriate books based on students' English proficiency. Principal Cai said that many parents reported that their children often communicate in English at home, often watch English cartoons, and even found that their children performed better when using assessment papers translated into English. The teacher also observed that some students were able to have conversations and games in English. In order to meet the expectations of parents and the language needs of students, the school has decided to open a class in Primary One with English as the main teaching language starting from the next school year, covering subjects such as mathematics, science, humanities, music, physical education and visual arts. It will also be equipped with exclusive English teaching materials and implement dual-track teaching.

The school offers English bridging courses for prospective primary one students, and organizes Summer Camp and interesting English courses during the summer vacation, including phonics, story telling and interesting games, to help students gain early access to primary school English courses. The school sets different values themes every year, and this year the focus is on "empathy." Students experience the difficulties of the elderly by wearing earmuffs to experience hearing deterioration, wearing eye masks with glass beads to experience limited vision, and wearing hunchback straps to experience mobility issues.
