Holy Carpenter Primary School Principal Wu Meiying and her teaching team are well aware that reading is an important element of learning, so they are determined to promote a reading atmosphere in the school. For the first time, they have designed a themed reading day based on "Journey to the West", one of China's four great classics. They hope that through interesting and diverse activities and performances, they can induce children to appreciate Chinese literature and enter China's magnificent cultural treasure house.

Promote cultural theme reading day, organized by teachers and students in collaboration

The school takes it as its mission to cultivate students' leadership skills and build their learning confidence. Therefore, when preparing for the "Journey to the West Theme Reading Day", the teacher specially invited students to plan programs and design booth games to cultivate their common skills such as organization and collaboration. Principal Ng Mei-ying said: "This event was jointly planned by teachers and students. The students not only provided valuable opinions, but also acted as teachers' helpers, helping to conceive the content of the booths and responsible for the layout and implementation of the activities. Their active participation was also praised by teachers, parents and guests." With the cooperation of teachers and students, the "Journey to the West" themed reading day has a total of six booths and different activities, as well as a photo area and gashapon area. Students can participate in game booths such as "Evaluate Your Estimation", "Bravely Enter the Circle" and "Smart Eyes and Hands". Through the games, students can learn Chinese and get to know the characters in the book. They can also participate in art workshops and make Princess Iron Fan's "Panana Fan".

In addition to educational booth games and performances, the campus has also been redesigned with the theme of "Journey to the West", with a new "balloon tree" and colorful triangular canvas hangings hung outside the campus gate to add Chinese cultural elements and make students more engaged in activities to create a strong reading atmosphere." More than just learning Chinese, learning perseverance across subjects

During the "Journey to the West" themed reading day, the teacher in charge actively searched for external resources to create a different reading experience for the students. With the efforts of the teachers, the event invited Principal Tse Chun-keung, emeritus director-general of the Anglican (Hong Kong) Primary School Supervisory Committee, singer Mr. Ho Chin Lok (Rock), Assistant Director of Hung Hom Public Library Mr. Ng Man-sham and emerging picture book writer Ms. Chan Tsz-ying to serve as officiating guests at the opening ceremony. At the opening ceremony, guests shared their reading experiences and insights with teachers and students. As the "Grandpa of the Principal", Principal Xie extended the principle of "being a man and doing things" with the Sun Wukong in "Journey to the West", and shared the "spirit of perseverance" with students through stories and personal experiences, so that students can understand the perseverance of the master and apprentice in the story who never gave up and overcame obstacles on the way to obtain the Western Scriptures.

At the same time, the activities integrate knowledge from different disciplines and implement the school's interdisciplinary learning spirit. For example, the Chinese Department has added an introduction to Chinese herbal medicine; the Visual Arts Department has also combined art and design concepts to launch a "Panana Fan" workshop; in addition, the General Studies Department has also followed the theme of "Journey to the West" and launched a STEAM magic show rich in Chinese culture. Library director Ms. Tang Nga-chu added: "To deepen the learning content of the reading day and increase the extension of the activities, we will arrange for students to visit the Hung Hom Public Library.
