TWGHs Mr & Mrs Kwong Sik Kwan College is committed to promoting students’ interest in English and has designed a series of courses and adjustments to help students develop their English abilities. Principal Chan To KinWe are well aware that not every child is good at English, and some students even have stress on English due to unpleasant learning experiences in primary school. To this end, he hopes to help students develop their English skills and create a positive learning environment so that students can accept English, fall in love with learning English, and find confidence and fun.

Carefully plan school-based courses according to students’ abilities

The school carefully plans English teaching strategies, specially designs school-based teaching materials according to the students' level, and adjusts and tailors the curriculum to meet the students' abilities and needs. This year, the school launched "Intensive Reading Notes" for Form One to Form Five, which covers part of the exam content, making it easier for students to master knowledge, review more easily, develop note-taking and interest in learning, help them gain a sense of accomplishment in learning, and stimulate motivation for English learning. Launched the Making a Difference (MAD) course to improve English skills in a targeted manner

In order to help the first-year students adapt to the English courses in middle schools, the school has specially launched the "MAD Course" to help students lay a solid foundation in a targeted manner. This course is conducted by foreign teachers in groups with classmates after school to ensure that the needs of each student are taken care of more intensively. The foreign teachers will first understand each student's English proficiency through a pre-test, and teach them pinyin and other skills in preparation for their future need to string together words and read words. At the end of the semester, the foreign teacher will arrange a post-test to analyze the students' English progress or changes in ability after receiving the "MAD course" through the "MAD report", and attach comments for the reference of students and parents to understand individual shortcomings and improve them.

Master reading skills and lay a solid foundation in English

Reading is an effective way to improve English proficiency. Starting from Form One and Two, the school has actively encouraged students to read more English books and implemented the "Reading to Learn" program. The school will first use the EPER test of the Edinburgh Project to understand the students' English reading ability, and classify them into levels one (Non-reader) to level four (Independent reader), and provide reading materials according to different levels. For example, for Level 1, the teacher will start with simple sentences or new words and gradually consolidate students’ English knowledge. "We hope that students can absorb more English knowledge, use their favorite stories and articles to arouse their interest in English, learn more vocabulary, lay a solid foundation, and enhance their self-confidence," said teacher Li Muqi, director of the English subject.

This year, the school launched a new three-year plan. In class, the teacher will ask students to digest the text one by one or paragraph by paragraph, sort out the context of each paragraph, analyze the content layout of the chapter, and guide students to gradually understand the meaning of the chapter, learn to read and understand, and share their feelings in English. Vice Principal Tang Zhien added: "Teachers will select materials with strong story telling and teach students to use the "Six He Method" to analyze. If students master the reading framework, they will be able to understand the focus faster and understand the article at a deeper level, which will be more helpful for their reading comprehension."

Interesting learning experience to cultivate interest in learning

The school arranges diversified learning experiences to make English learning more interesting. For example, during the "Hands-on" experiential learning period in high schools, various English learning activities are designed, such as English booth games, to allow students to use English in games and interactions. In addition, for historical and cultural topics, the school also arranges for students to visit the Forbidden City and other places to learn the English names of cultural relics and exhibits, and provide relevant English teaching materials to help them absorb language knowledge from the visit.

At the same time, the school organizes the "English Leisure Club" and regularly holds activities such as table games, electronic learning games and UNO competitions. School sponsoring groups also hold English camps, inviting foreign teachers to come to Hong Kong to conduct English courses and activities with students, creating an immersive English environment so that students can enjoy learning English. In addition, the school actively encourages students to participate in English drama and recitation activities, and arranges for them to participate in the English morning meeting "K-Channel" so that they can speak English bravely in front of the public and build their self-confidence.

Interdisciplinary English activities connect different areas of knowledge

The school promotes diversified interdisciplinary English activities and organically integrates English into other subjects. For example, the Physical Education Department and the English Department collaborated to launch golf courses and equipped them with a golf simulator with English mode, allowing students to experience the sport while also learning related English vocabulary. In addition, the English Department and the Visual Arts Department held an "Egg Rolling Competition" in which students from each class designed their own Easter eggs and presented their design concepts in English. Through interdisciplinary English activities, students can learn English happily and gain an in-depth understanding of English applications in different areas.

Exchange activities to see the world and gain a sense of satisfaction by using English effectively

Thanks to the support of the sponsoring organization, students have the opportunity to go out of Hong Kong and visit Vancouver, London, Singapore and other places, allowing students to use English to communicate with local people, strengthen their listening and conversational skills, and understand the development and customs of various parts of the world. In addition, the school also incorporates English elements into exchange activities with sister schools in China. Earlier, an exchange group from sister schools in Beijing visited. The school specially arranged oral English learning activities, allowing Form 3 students to use English to introduce Hong Kong characteristics to students in Beijing, tell Hong Kong stories in English, and gain a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction from sharing.

The school has introduced the LTTC English test and arranged online English tests held by external organizations for Form 4 students so that they can obtain relevant English certificates before graduation, thereby enriching their resume and providing recognized qualifications for future employment or overseas study. These exams can also help students understand their English proficiency, set learning goals, and add value to themselves early on.

The Career Planning Section also works closely with the English Department to teach students how to write an English resume. In order to further improve interview skills, the school also purchased an artificial intelligence system to set English interview questions based on the occupations that students are interested in for them to conduct mock interviews. Students can review their performance based on the interview video and make improvements.

School-based learning incentives to cater for learning needs

In order to stimulate students' learning motivation, the school implements the "School-based Learning Award Scheme" to encourage students to actively participate and demonstrate their learning results. In this plan, a theme is set every month, and teachers give bonus points based on students' performance. When students reach a certain score, they can enjoy the fun of clipping dolls or capsules, helping students establish goals and promote their progress in many aspects, including English.

In addition, the school also pays special attention to students who have needs in English learning, launching "Individual Education Plans" (IEPs) and carrying out after-school tutoring training to help them improve in reading and writing.
