Buddhist Chan Wing Kan Memorial School In last year’s high school promotion allocation, more than 90% of students were assigned to the top three choices, and many of them were admitted to English-language secondary schools that were their favorites and widely welcomed by parents. Comprehensive reading plan opens up a treasure trove of knowledge

Reading is the key to unlocking the treasure house of knowledge. The school strongly encourages students to read English books and implements different reading plans based on students' needs. For upper primary school students, the school implements the "Guided Reading" program. Foreign teachers will understand the students' English proficiency at the beginning of the semester, divide them into three groups according to their ability, and arrange reading materials of different difficulties. The group whose abilities need to be improved are led by local teachers to help them gradually understand the article; while the two groups with better abilities are guided by foreign teachers and provide interactive teaching in English.

Junior primary school students participate in the "Space Town" program, which is also divided into groups based on students' English proficiency and has an upgrade system. Foreign teachers, local English teachers and teaching assistants jointly guide students to read interesting English books and complete related assignments and activities to stimulate their interest in English.

In addition, the school has also introduced an English e-book platform, allowing students to read anytime and anywhere, extending English learning time to after class and promoting independent learning. The platform’s e-books are equipped with sound and animation assistance to help students understand the story content more easily, and provide reading exercises and rewards to further attract students to enjoy reading English books.

Enrich English context and use English confidently

The school is committed to creating a rich English environment for students and encouraging them to listen and speak more. To this end, it has allocated additional resources and hired four foreign English teachers. They are not only responsible for classroom teaching, but also organize various English activities, such as English dramas, recitations, Fun English and other extracurricular activities. In addition, foreign teachers will cooperate with English ambassadors to organize different activities on English Day every week, such as English booth games during recess, and film English programs to be played in multiple intelligence classrooms.

In addition, the school also arranges exchange trips for students to English-speaking countries such as Singapore and Australia, allowing them to use English in a natural context, communicate with local people, understand local culture, and broaden their horizons. The curriculum combines interdisciplinary elements to prepare you for further study in English and Chinese.

Considering that some students will enter secondary schools that teach all English, the school has therefore added interdisciplinary elements to the curriculum planning. For example, in school-based multiple intelligence courses, English is combined with different subject topics so that students can be exposed to more diversified English knowledge during the learning process. Take the fifth-grade multiple intelligence class as an example. The class is sound-themed. In addition to teaching Chinese musical instruments, it also introduces famous hearing-impaired musicians and uses micro:bit to design devices to help the hearing-impaired.

In the classroom, students need to report their design concepts and work features in English, which not only trains their speech and reporting skills, but also expands their English vocabulary and prepares them for the future all-English teaching environment.
