Common Interview Formats at Direct Subsidy and Private Primary Schools

Interviews vary by school — individual conversations, group activities, or classroom observation.

What Are the Interview Formats?

When applying to Direct Subsidy or private primary schools, interviews are usually required.

Individual Conversation (Most Common)

A teacher speaks with one or two children at a time, asking simple questions. Teachers observe communication skills, attention span, manners, and basic self-care ability.

Group Activities

Several children play games, do puzzles, build blocks, or draw together while teachers observe silently. Teachers observe social skills and attitude toward peers.

Classroom Observation

Children join a real class. The teacher gives a lesson and observes attention, interest, and behavior.

Activity or Trial Class

Some schools arrange a full activity or trial class lasting one to two hours.

How Parents Can Help Prepare

  • Chat with your child often, encouraging them to speak up
  • Teach basic manners (greeting, saying thank you)
  • Practice storytelling from pictures
  • Get a good night sleep
  • Do not let your child memorize answers
