What Are School Nets? How Does the Education Bureau Divide Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is divided into School Nets by the Education Bureau. Your net determines which schools you can choose. This guide explains it all in plain language.

Hong Kong is divided into School Nets by the Education Bureau. Each area belongs to one School Net. Do you know which School Net your child belongs to? This is important because it affects which schools you can choose!

What Is a School Net?

The Education Bureau divides Hong Kong into many School Nets. Every child is assigned to one School Net when applying for primary or secondary school. During Central Allocation, you can only choose schools within your own School Net.

Primary School Nets — About 30+

  • Eastern District School Net — includes several well-known government primary schools
  • Kowloon City School Net — many elite schools, one of the most popular areas
  • Sha Tin School Net — one of the largest school nets in the New Territories

Secondary School Nets — Different from Primary!

Important: Secondary school nets and primary school nets are NOT the same! Many parents assume that after finishing a primary school, their child will go to a nearby secondary school — this is wrong!

How Do I Know Which School Net My Child Is In?

Ask your child's school, or check the Education Bureau's official information.

Is a Bigger School Net Better?

Not necessarily. The most important thing is to know what schools are in your school net.

Can You Break Free from School Net Restrictions?

During Central Allocation, there is an option to choose schools outside your School Net. However, this option has lower priority than schools within your net.
