Child Emotional Management — What Parents Should Do When a Child Has a Tantrum

Tantrums are a normal developmental stage. How parents respond affects a child is ability to learn emotional management.

Why Do Children Have Tantrums?

Tantrums are a normal way for children to express emotions, especially before they have enough vocabulary. Common causes: tiredness, hunger, frustration, wanting something unavailable, feeling neglected.

What Parents Should Do During a Tantrum

Stay Calm

This is the most important thing. Take a deep breath first.

Acknowledge the Emotion

Do not say "Stop crying" — say "I know you are upset." Acknowledge the feeling first.

Redirect Attention

For younger children, redirect attention to something else.

Give Choices

"Do you want to tidy toys first or take a bath first?" Offering choices reduces resistance.

Review After Calm

After the child has calmed down, explain simply why the tantrum was not appropriate.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

  • Ensure adequate sleep and nutrition
  • Avoid making demands when the child is tired or hungry
  • Explain rules in advance
