Too Much Homework Making Your Child Cry? — Analysing the Causes and Finding Solutions

Excessive homework is a source of frustration for many families. Understanding the root cause is the first step to finding an effective solution.

When a child cries because of too much homework, parents usually react in two ways: try their best to help finish it, or scold them for crying. But neither method solves the underlying problem.

Step one: confirm whether the homework load is really too much

Every child has a different ability and pace. With the same homework, some children finish in half an hour while others need two hours. If most classmates can finish on time and only your child cannot, the problem may be efficiency. If the whole class struggles, the homework load may indeed be on the heavy side.

How to improve efficiency problems

Review the homework environment and habits. Are there distractions? Does the child often stop to drink water or go to the toilet? Does the child procrastinate because of not understanding? Treat the cause accordingly.

If the homework load really is too much

You can first talk to the teacher and explain your child's situation. Some teachers may offer suggestions, or appropriately adjust their requirements if necessary.

At the same time, teach children to manage expectations. Some homework really cannot be completed within a reasonable time, and learning to distinguish between "most important" and "less important" tasks is also important.
