What is the HKDSE?
The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) is the public examination taken by Secondary 6 (S6) students in Hong Kong. Results are mainly used for local university admission through JUPAS and for overseas applications.
Can Mainland Students Sit the DSE?
Yes. The DSE has two candidate categories: school candidates and private candidates. Even without Hong Kong school enrolment, mainland students can register as private candidates if they meet the conditions set by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA).
Private Candidate Eligibility
According to the HKEAA, a private candidate must satisfy at least one of the following:
- Has previously sat the HKDSE or an equivalent examination; or
- Is at least 19 years old on 1 January of the examination year; or
- Is studying or has completed S6 (or an equivalent course).

Which Subjects?
The four core subjects are Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics, and Citizenship and Social Development. Candidates may also choose 2–3 elective subjects. Results are reported in levels from 1 to 5**, with 5** being the highest.
Mainland Exam Centres from 2024
Since 2024, DSE examinations have also been held at Hong Kong children's schools in the Greater Bay Area (e.g. Shenzhen and Guangzhou). Mainland students following the HKDSE curriculum can sit the exam at their own school without travelling to Hong Kong.
Recognition of DSE Results
DSE results are recognised by local universities and institutions in many countries and regions. In addition, Hong Kong students' DSE results can be used to apply for admission to selected mainland universities without sitting the gaokao. Check each institution's official entry requirements.
