Misconception 1: "The DSE has no barriers — anyone can directly register"
Fact: From 2026, first-time candidates under 19 must go through special approval; it is not without barriers.
Misconception 2: "Mainland students can sit the exam at a mainland centre"
Fact: Mainland pilot centres are reserved for eligible partner-school candidates; private candidates must travel to Hong Kong.
Misconception 3: "Taking the DSE lets you enter mainland universities without an exam"
Fact: The exemption scheme requires a Hong Kong identity card and Home Return Permit; candidates with purely mainland household registration are not eligible.
Misconception 4: "The DSE is much easier than the gaokao"
Fact: The assessment system is different, English demands are high, and critical thinking is emphasised — it is not simply easier.
Important Reminders
- Dual identity is prohibited: you cannot register for the same year both as a school candidate and a private candidate;
- Registration deadlines are strict and late applications may not be approved;
- Keep your documents valid;
- Official channels: www.hkeaa.edu.hk and www.hkdse.hkeaa.edu.hk. Do not trust unofficial agents' false claims or "shadow enrolment" promises.
